What I Do?
Trauma Specialist/EMDR Trained
Specializing in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), I employ this powerful psychotherapy method to help individuals overcome deeply entrenched psychological distress and negative beliefs. EMDR is grounded in neurobiological research, revealing that when you experience intense emotional distress, your brain's ability to process information becomes disrupted. This can cause traumatic moments to become "frozen" in time, making it feel as though the trauma is occurring all over again, with the same vividness of sights, sounds, and feelings. EMDR directly influences the way your brain processes these memories, allowing you to see distressing material in a new, less painful way.
How Does EMDR Work?
Based on neurobiological research, we know that when you get very upset, your brain cannot process process information as it does ordinarily. A moment can become "frozen" in time and remembering a trauma may feel as bad as going through it the first time because the images, sounds, smells and feelings have not changed. Such memories have a lasting effect that interferes with the way you may see the world and the way you relate to other people. EMDR has a direct effect on the way that your brain processes information. Therefore, EMDR can be thought of as a physiologically based therapy that helps you see disturbing material in a new and less distressing way.
How Does EMDR Become Incorporated into Treatment?
The nature of your concerns, life circumstances, and the extent of previous trauma will determine the number of EMDR sessions required. I typically integrate EMDR within the framework of standard "talk" therapy, whether as an adjunct to ongoing therapy or as a standalone treatment.
Could You Benefit From EMDR?
EMDR is particularly effective for individuals struggling with conditions such as chronic negative beliefs, present-day trauma, CPTSD, complicated grief, disturbing memories, stress, addictions, performance anxiety, and the lasting impact of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. If you find yourself facing any of these challenges, EMDR may offer a path toward healing and relief.
Substance Abuse and Alcohol Counselor:
Certified by New York State and trained at NYU, I have extensive experience in both in-patient and out-patient detox and rehabilitation centers throughout New York City. My work encompasses family interventions and treating adult survivors of alcohol and substance abuse within their families. In our sessions, we will explore the underlying reasons for your dependency, understanding that at the core of addiction is often unresolved pain. The substance you rely on is typically a reflection of your personal history, shaped by genetics, character, and life experiences. Through treatment, you will gain insight into how these substances have served you, and we will work together to help you find the strength to face life sober. For many, this process is like discovering your true self in the presence of a caring other, possibly for the first time, leading to a profound and transformative journey.
Parent Coach
With certification in parenting coaching, we will explore the multi-faceted sides of parenting in this day and age. Raising children deserves a legitimate place in our psyche. Parenting stressors deserve to be acknowledged and validated so that we don’t project our past traumas onto our children.
If we can talk more honestly about the challenges and emotional toll parenting takes, we make begin to feel more legitimized and less alone. It’s a highly intimidating responsibility and we are all doing it for the very first time, no matter where you fall on the parenting trajectory. Let’s begin by reducing our collective shame and bring our wisest adult self into the room.
In the words of the legendary psychiatrist Donald Winnicot, we don’t need to be the perfect parent, just simply “good enough."
